Kevin Beasley: Object Connection
Kevin Beasley:
Is invested in the Thing as it is. The importance of the thing and how it has come into into his life and how he builds a relationship with it. -> creating a narrative, rooted in the decision is whatever story he has to tell.
On Working in South Africa: Applies his methodology to the environment so has to make his work on location. Garment all come from Aid to Trade - donated from Europe and US Wholesale bundles sold to the highest bidder in Africa. Political charge to the act of gathering clothing and knowing where it comes from.
Invested in garments rather than fabrics - structural account of the body - physical presence/lack thereof which can be reshaped.
Combines objects and abstraction V.s story telling with the garment which have been shaped/draped
-> new life for the object and a new story
+ sound recordings: evidence of a different kind of mark making
Presence is vital - of the artist ‘bringing yourself’ to the work
Raw material: multiple part, sound installation of a cotton gin and physical works based around cotton
Link to slavery
Context of the materials creates the narrative
Cotton gin - hear it in one room and see it in another - viewer decides how long they want to look or listen and what it means
What their relationships are to the materials
He leaves the responsibility to the viewer.

I see all these artists and there are things that I want to pinch from them all. There is so much I want to make, and different avenues I want to pursue. And it’s so overwhelming. There isn’t the time in the day to make everything I want to that day. And I get so afraid I will forget any ideas. Or the ideas will be so far removed from whatever else I am working on that it won’t make sense. But I look at Isa Genzken and each piece feels so different but she can’t help but explore the avenues, and that is so brave. But I also wonder if I worked with total clarity, or under strict parameters whether this would help to calm me down, a bit like how the slow craft of quilting slowed me down by necessity.
