Week 9: using oils, painting like Klee?

I am trying to break down the image by Klee called Double Tent In an attempt to understand how he created the image.

1. It was one image that has been cut down the middle and shifted with an additional piece of paper attached to fill the gap.

2. It is a series of washes, the colours are not mixed on the palette, they are mixed by using thin washes

3. Some sections seem to be painted out first (maybe the diamonds) and then horizontal washes overlay this. The horizontal washes seem to only extend over part of the image.

What will take time is figuring out which ground colour is where to begin with. I’m not sure I have this amount of time on my hands, or the inclination, but I think trying to break down the image process is more interesting to me and more useful.

I am using Gouache because I have it to hand but also I haven’t ever used it, so this is a perfect opportunity to try and understand how it can act.

I am still sort of rejecting the idea of using oil paints. It could certainly be wonderful and change my life, but actually I am not hot for painting painting right now anyway, so I haven’t got an application for it. Which is helping me keep rejecting it. I like to work fast and know how acrylic works, and to be honest even acrylic dries too slowly for me sometimes, so I can’t see myself enjoying the slow life. I also relish in the application of materials to other materials and mixing media, again which oil doesn’t particularly support since you have to prime the surface. Maybe I need to hear from someone who uses oil in this approach or tactic. HOWEVER I have water based oil paint samples which I have performed my tests on, I’m not entirely sure what they are composed of but they do feel different to acrylic, less heavy, more glowing/luminous.
