Week 5 2D: New Project: New Research

I am going to continue my work on the Community Quilts alongside beginning another project. In the summer I purchased a 'Bundle' on eBay of '53 Table Linen'. I liked the idea that this could be some kind of canvas for 2D which meant I wasn't purchasing raw materials and also because old textiles just ping something inside me, they always have.

I now have new textile skills which I can potentially use in this work too. When you begin something new that doesn't have a specific direction yet, just the materials, it is rather daunting. Looking back to my List Project from last year, I was a bit lost until I began to focus in on research, lateral research, around the subject, on human psychology etc. I have really been thinking about Nostalgia this summer, maybe because of Lockdown, I didn't have a nostalgia for Pre-Covid but the simple way of living and the slowing of time reminded me of growing up. And probably this is what our nostalgia stems from. Is my nostalgia why I like vintage textiles so much? Or is it merely an aesthetic?

I am also looking at the ontology of every day life which is cited to be the artists Liz Magor's driving force. Noticing things other people have not, noticing discarded objects/clothing.
These table linens are essentially discarded, 53 linens is a lot, too much to be coveted any more. I think of things such as, where did they come from, who's were they, are they from one persons collection or are they from several households. What is handmade and what is manufactured.

And then, if I am going to paint on them - am I going to paint on them - what is the subject matter.
Or are the table linens going to be the subject matter.
