Reflections on Quilt making and the Artist Helen Johnson
Stream of Conciousness Writing...
18/10/20 I find this is something I have to notice over and over again, when you try to copy or not so much copy but emulate or be very directly inspired by something, you inevitably feel a bit meh about the outcome, once you have tested the technique and then decide how to apply this in your innate art language then you can start to enjoy what you are doing. When you have certain skills developed you are able to be given a brief and simply apply your personal language or techniques to this and then you can really visualise this artists narrative or discourse, it becomes more personal. Testing out these quilting techniques has been a challenge because it is something quite new for me, but the more I do and the more I see what my personal stitches look like and how I like to apply the quilting stitches or where I like to place things, or what I like a quilt to look like (i.e got a thing for colour on pale and contrast stitching, but subtle contrast), the more I enjoy making them. And if someone doesn’t like the quilt I made that didn’t feel quite right to me I will be sad because I don’t either, but if they don’t like the one I have made that feels right to me then I will feel they don’t understand or it isn’t there style, but it will be or might be for someone else but I will feel strongly about my work and support it!
