week 3: free writing, mark making machine, sense of touch, artists drawings
Reflections on making mid week..
I found most pleasure describing the bone structure with my marks, making hands lines and open spaces for expanses and soft tissues. To then apply a detailed study really shows the anatomy of the ace with the underlying bone structure. I think the paper in landscape would allow me to map out the bone structure then I can find a technique to add detail for the skin and soft tissues. I would like these to record in a way and show the boney structure beneath n a prominent light. It is easier to do this by touch and feel the true contours and not just the perceived areas. To do; -> paper in Landscape position ->close eyes and make facial map ->apply selected details?
Paint and palette knife - following the flat surfaces of the hard tissues of the face. Skull-like.
Crumpled paper, white charcoal, oil pastels - white charcoal delineation of hard tissues drawn blind, the oil pastel added from viewing face in a mirror. Why doesn’t this work, face is front facing so not very dynamic, almost a bit spooky.
Graphite drawing blind, almost in a continuous line style. The continuous line works for me or feels right to me so that I can map the features.
Crumpled paper, charcoal drawing blind, oil pastels blind, brown paper with ear drawn with a mirror, mirror work of face using black boot polish. The boot polish seeps into the raised areas of the crumpled paper allowing you to create different densities of black.
Continuous line drawing blind, ball pen, this allowed me to move smoothly helping me to create the shapes made by my pinched soft tissues. Pulling the skin and squeezing muscles and fat.
Pinch painting of soft tissues.
Charcoal line from my Occiput round to the right ear, across the face and to the left ear. Blind. Washed with 2 inch brush and water. Colouring pencil drawing 5mins looking down into mirror.

Free Writing
Mark Making Machine:
Conceptual work, within the premise of a mark making machine. Packaging from Lockdown containing a book I received in the post today. This is passed through the letter box 51times to mark the 51days of strict Lockdown. Thinking about the psychological or physical marks made on us over these days.
Sense and Touch - Drawing the face blind
I think my response to this will always be affected by my knowledge of anatomy, having studied it for 5 years and working with the spaced of the face for 10 further years, you can’t really escape it. I found myself making more continuous lines than separate gestures to follow the form. My marks have always been heavy, I can either embrace this or work on being more delicate, but I suppose you have to decide if it’s working for you or not.
Drawing Inspiration
Van Gogh’s Pencil vs Reed Pen work. The use of the line is different, there is more movement and flow with the reed pen which is much more like the way he uses paint.
Paula Rego’s works are so intense and true, they ooze the feminine, not in a girly way, but in the real way it is to be a woman.
Caroline Deane - Gestural and subtle, considered but free marks to create form. https://carolinedeane.org/life-drawing
