The gendered vessel leading to Susan Hiller

Vincentelli, M. (2000) Women and ceramics. Manchester: Manchester University Press. I took this out to investigate the gendering notion and application of vessel to the female relating to my ceramics project. However I came across......

Susan Hiller - was an anthropologist. Works on projects, gathers material and information over years until it is enough to be worked upon or to form an installation

now realise I was enraptured by one of her works at the Whitworth earlier in the week. A piece showing collected postcard images of Rough Seas at traditional Victorian seaside resorts. Lifted by the composition and coloured Perspex. When you grow up by the sea these rare moments stick with you. I recall driving down the Prom in my mum’s little car with waves crashing over us. It was fabulous and scary.

She has called this body of work (because she is using images not her own) ‘dedicated to other artists’

This anthropological way of looking suits my list project, which is fundamentally anthropological due to the origins of the materials. I am keen to document my work with this more scientific approach within the project. Like Hiller I have been collecting this for years with no idea of what way it may develop, and i will continue to add to my collection in the future. So far List Project 2007-
