Rachel Whiteread.
Instinctively I am not drawn to the image of ‘House’, since it is grey, angular and fairly sterile in appearance. However her drawings are wonderful. Although again grey, angular and sterile they have a textured quality (due to her use of correction fluid?). Her image of parquet flooring is expressive, and somewhat imaginary, holding an illustrative quality, whereas the images of the bath tub for example could be a working drawing for a designer. A real juxtaposition. Perhaps it is the subtlety in shades from the paper, to the pencil, to the correction fluid (that always muddies).
I can associate with her as I am drawn to collecting mundane, (nostalgic), and obsolete items. Having married a Swede I have unfortunately had to keep this collection to a minimum but the idea holds true. Perhaps I ought to record found items before I discard or reject them. Have a collection of images rather than items. I am too scared by this as I am not by nature a clean illustrator. But it is a thought, nonetheless.
