Heads mini project reflections
Positives about blue head - stability, simple stylised image achieved, flattened form, textures show through, matte/opaque finish typical of a cameo, more modern colour and style
Negatives - very obviously a first attempt at a new technique, have not achieved any form for the hair creating a chicken comb effect, should have used a thought out sketch to describe and then copy the features, does not reference the cameo clearly enough
Positives vessel head - development from first use of the technique, after sketching I was aiming for a finished item which I think I achieved, references made to a cabbage which the glaze is highlighting.
Negatives - could be refined (not so much a negative), could put in a base to truly be a vessel, the neck support is not stable enough - there is a rock.
This work highlights the need to try a technique first, and with the knowledge of how it works develop a more concrete idea on from this.
Small head - built from two small pinch pots, manipulate the clay from both sides allowing you to open up the features and create a real sense of form. I really liked this piece unglazed and for me I removed a quality by applying this finish. There was lots of heavy grog particles visible and the glazed has removed this. I preferred the texture because it felt like a little egg dug up from the earth. Like a pebble. The glaze also closed the eyes which were intact open.
