Ceramics Elective Coil Built Vessel
A rough outline to follow as I build my form. Adjustments had to be made almost immediately to the base (minor surgery) which was too large. I am aware the pot would have grown too high and wide and would be extremely heavy.
There is a (what I find) wonderful twist in her hips which creates a sense of movement. I am intending to make the pot readably feminised. I at no point insisted the form strictly adhere to the image because I find images don’t portray the 3d qualities that you can achieve in hand building with clay. That is not to say I am not intent on making a form that dimensionally flows and has a sense of proportion.
This was not a direct inspiration but I found her work after creating the form. Bust like in shape, loose lines and doodles decorate. http://www.janewheeler.co.uk/wp/?page_id=541 http://www.janewheeler.co.uk/wp/?page_id=1001
I need to consider glazing methods. It has been suggested that we use slips, it could be interesting to use the sgraffito technique.
Next day:
Finishing the pot, the shapes did not feel right, the ‘hips’ of the pot were lovely and curvaceous with movement. And the ‘breast’ area felt like a separate entity, there was no correlation. I will discuss with others and probably will section the pot into two pieces, a large vessel and a small vase style vessel. Unless I can radically change things!
