Journals etc over the 1st semester
A note on some of the Journals that I have been reading over the first semester;
Mulvey, L. (1975). Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. Screen, 16(3), pp.6-18.
After a discussion, possibly in a lecture, or perhaps from a TV show, regarding the male gaze I wanted to know more about the idea of the female gaze. To understand this it is pretty much imperative to read this seminal essay by Laura Mulvey. It is all very Freudian. There is a contemporary movement amongst artists, directors etc who are female to consider the female gaze at the forefront of their work, or understand that the/their female gaze gives an alternative commentary. Excellent. I am thinking about my favourite film, Clueless directed by Amy Heckerling and the recent film Ladybird directed by Greta Gerwig.
Markowitz, S. (1994). The Distinction between Art and Craft. Journal of Aesthetic Education, 28(1), p.55.
I was lead to read this by my interest and use of typical craft type methods of working. Knitting, weaving, sewing, ceramics etc. What is it that differentiates craft and fine art? There certainly is a distinction. Is it the approach and the concept behind the work? Painting by numbers suggests craft rather than fine art, following an embroidery pattern vs freestyle stitch work.
There is a suggestion that craft is linked to function as one cannot fully respond to the aesthetic qualities whilst dealing with the practical use of the object.
Graw, I. (2018). The Love of Painting. Berlijn: Sternberg Press. Introduction Chapter.

Read this following a request for a seminar, pretty flowery stuff and quite unapproachable for the non-artist.
Haring, K. (2010). Keith Haring journals. New York, N.Y.: Penguin Group.
Lovely to read the journals of someone who clearly lived as an artist, he was constantly questioning himself, the art world, his works etc as we all do. I enjoyed this as I can understand how he felt at the beginning of his career. It’s hard to think of successful commercial/non-commercial artists as all starting out with the same considerations as yourself.
I also read several pieces in the development of my essay for HACS but this is really dealt with within the essay.
