05/01/2020 Research and ideas for Mini Brief The Head

Theme

The Head Mini brief - working in clay

Aiming to take a more fluid, painterly, illustrative approach than a ‘sculpture’ approach.
Possibly use slips etc on the wet/leather hard clay
Intend to make marks, finger prints etc

Self portrait? Imagination? Found image? Hybrid type?

Considering the ‘cameo’

Relevance to my essay subject ‘the selfie’ and ‘the toilette’. Cameo featured in the Boucher painting Madame de Pompadour at her Toilette displaying King Louis, her lover. The cameo is a selfie, given to a loved one.
The shells most prized for carving cameos are those with naturally occurring layers of contrasting color. Shown here is a cameo carved into a kameynye shell, from the collection of author and historian Carol Greene. Courtesy of Dr. Anthony Cavo

This reminds me of Hito Steyerl’s lecture discussing the mass production of modern art. That everyone has an art project, and now, with perhaps the internet and reality TV, instagram, YouTube etc. we are ‘able?’ to achieve these projects. (Deskilling of Art).
