Working with casting concrete
Research led me to find Daniel Arsham, who casts forms in volcanic ash and crystalline structures such as amethyst.
Interestingly he has also made casts of cassette Tapes... it now looks as though I have copied his work, but I am just another child of the 80s! Nostalgia rules!
I did not reference his work directly in my concrete pieces, but I am interested by the nostalgia factor and the influence of this on my ceramics work.
I have made a nod to the work of Jeff Muhs, but using a milk bottle. Including a sample of knitting and squeezing in the waist. It is a comment on the pressures on women.
Continuing the ‘playful’ work I thought about concrete Jenga blocks. I had a wine box to hand and created triangular forms. This means that Jenga is impossible, the triangles will roll away. There is innate movement to the forms because of this, which isn’t an obvious property of concrete. I have added colour via emulsion which could be flaky/transient...it may not even work. I look forward to seeing how things set. I have used the same colour as my wood/felt sculpture to allow continuity.
If this materialises as I hope I will try a pentagonal form next week. And can repeat the triangles to create more blocks for the ‘game’.
Potential for concrete within a handmade football?
Unexpected weight.
