Studio work 11/11/19
Retrieved roll curtain sample from a skip. Experimentation; as a medium itself, flat/canvas like, sewn to make 3D forms...
Sewn small strips together making small ‘canvas’ pattern sequences. Have a minimalistic quality as a group. Lose the purpose as individual items.
Moved into larger pieces where the layout and stripe effect is reminiscent of DNA sequencing. Again the innate simple colour palette and pattern is pleasing.
Attempted a little 3D work, but too costumey.
Unsure if this is ‘enough’. Used three ‘canvasses’ to apply images to. The paint sucked into the chenille like a stain on a sofa. Could use this as a base platform. Three images of women. Could link the stain to the image, could be a little dark.
My specific interests and inspirations tend to return to the nostalgic; vintage/retro/childhood memories of elderly relatives. And the new context of contemporary life.
Enjoying a reference to past ‘trends’. What is fashionable in a society at a given time and why the last trend dictated and moved into the next.
Use of this fabric as a medium in itself is bringing it into a somehow contemporary context but makes you consider the time this material was made.
Can question or make you consider how society and its views and tastes have changed in this period. (20 years)
