Mini Project 2 10/10/19

Week 1
Using the verb ‘lean’.

Extruded clay pieces, selected those that have bent, twisted or folded on themselves.
1st piece - Chosen to make no alterations to the clay bodies in my first sculpture to give a sense of the clays inherent materiality. Forms laid together using instruction from the curves and forms present in the clay.
Cube extrusion - dent
Large coil - bend
Small coil - fold

Instinctive and fast build. Likely to require little in the way of colour during glaze process, distractions aren’t required.

I would like the inside of the cube to have a glossy finish to encourage you to peer through the space. This may not be possible with using dip glazes.

-> see Ron Nagle

2nd piece - Experimenting with leather hard slab. Using its own weight to curve, I made a cylindrical vase-type form (no base). Applied tubular pieces to compliment the roll of the clay. This may not work since extruded pieces and rolled slabs have a different quality.
The glaze could make this piece. It was not as satisfying to make as the first piece, not so instinctive. Perhaps because I handled the clay somewhat.

Next week - Try building with a single shape?

-> trip to North Wales, look at tide controllers, found items on the beach etc.
Could make a collection of artefacts, mimic washed up items.

Idea -> Extruding clay is like a Mr Whippy dispenser. How differently will clay act when being extruded into/onto something.

Week 2

Using the idea of ice cream dispensing. Extruded forms onto a board, trying to mimic the pressure used by the ‘cone’.

Pinching the ends of the clay concerns me because of over handling, could make it look forced or over worked. But does need to be done to create the traditional wimped end of the ice cream. Aim to use tools and not finger the work for a more mechanical finish.

Worried it looks like tooth paste - this is cliched.

I like the play with culture;
Mr Whippy - very British
Churros - Spanish
Jalebi - South Asian

Sticking to Mr Whippy because of cultural appropriation concerns.

Why shouldn’t the work be silly? It is silly.

1st piece - slip too thick, looks too placed and deliberate.

2nd piece - watered slip down and used slip trailer, more fluid and natural like the pouring of sauce.

Flicked coloured slip on for a 100s &1000s look, this could look awful.
Clear or coloured glaze to be decided.

Concerned over lack of context, need research.
More successful than I had anticipated in creating the form.

3rd piece - Biomorphic forms, washed up artefacts

4th piece - cut/twist/fold

Both will be easier to analyse once glazed.
